Toddler Discipline Help: The Time Out Pad

No one loves time out. I tell my students all the time that there is nothing worse than having to disciplinethem; I’d much rather they discipline themselves. Inevitably, whether we’re talking 13 year olds or my own toddler, the limits are pushed and consequences are inevitable. Though we’ve used time outs fairly successfully, the Time Out Pad from Keen Distribution works out all the kinks. After setting the pad for the desired number of minutes, the child sits on it and is alerted by a tune when the time out is finished. If they leave the pad early, a warning alarm will sound. This works great for us since my daughter is not a huge fan of remaining in place. The lights serve as a visual reminder that the time out is near completion; two minutes must seem like an eternity to a two year old! With resources such as “when to use a time out” and “positive parenting,” the Time Out Pad and accompanying resources help tremendously, making this one of our favorite all-time products for toddler!

Cool Tip: Use the “five steps to a time out,” reminding parents and caregivers exactly what to say from the first warning to apology, to maintain consistency.
