iPad + Kids = Potential Disaster *iGuy Giveaway*

For us, “potential” was a reality when our iPad was accidentally dropped on the floor by our son.  The screen smashed as did our desire to let them use the expensive device. With so many cool and educational iPad apps, the answer to our dilemma hinged on a majorly protective iPad cover–one designed specifically for kids. However, most kids’ covers are designed for iPad 2, but luckily iGuy came into our lives one sunny day in March with the ability to protect all iPads. He arrived on our doorstep and become the new favorite guy in our house almost instantly. Mom and dad were thrilled with the foam protection, and the kids have a blast standing him up to play games and shaking his hands.

Here’s a typical conversation from one sibling to another: “Can I have iGuy please?” And the response, “Sure, here you go!” OK, OK…maybe it’s more like, “I WANT iGUY!” with the response, “No, I’m using him.” We think of  iGuy by Speck Products  an opporunity to teach lessons in sharing.

Admittedly it’s not an easy lesson as Tmple Run is hard for me to give up.

New Disney Apps: Lion King & Tangled *Giveaway*

The Lion King: Timon’s Tale

The kids’ favorite iPad apps, not surprisingly, are nearly all Disney including their newest favorites “The Lion King: Timon’s Tale” and “Tangled: Storybook Deluxe“. For the longest time we couldn’t find our Lion King DVD so the kids didn’t know one of their mom’s favorite Disney films of all time. After finding in when I bought a new car, it amazingly worked fine after languishing on the car floor for an undetermined about of time. Lion King characters and songs are not familiar to them just in time for this brand new Disney Publishing Worldwide app for iPhone and iPad.  The Lion King: Timon’s Tale re-tells the classic story with tons of interaction, animation and music. Every time users see a chalk swipe they integrate into the story. My son’s favorite is the screen transformation pictured above and the title screen he helps to unveil. Watch the short video below to see the app in action.

Tangled: Storybook Deluxe

Any respectable Disney fan with young children is in love with the newest princess, Rapunzel. What may be my favorite Disney film of all time (hard to decide between Tangled an Princess and the Frog) now has it’s own iPhone and iPad app, “Tangled: Storybook Deluxe“. As the name suggested, the app is built around the story of young Rapunzel who befriends Flynn Rider on her quest to see the lights and find her true identity. Following along word by word supports young readers interwoven with video clips from the movie. The clips love Pascal’s playfulness as he “drops in” to the story as well as the lantern game. I’ve been known to grab the iPad and take over “helping” the kids as lanterns fill the sky in a race against the clock. A gorgeous app worthy of the Disney name, my family highly recommends even with a $6.99 price tag. See the video below to watch it in action.

Cool Giveaway:

Be one of two winners to receive both new apps by commenting below about either your favorite Disney app or movie. US Only. For extra entries.

Q&A: What Toys Do Your Kids Love Most?

Of all of the toys you’ve reviewed, which are the ones your kids still play with? Which do they like most over time?

~Laura P.

Great question! Sometimes we’ll purchase a toy convinced it will be our kids’ new favorite only to languish in the toy box. Without a doubt the toy they play with is their three year old Step 2 Lifestyle Dream Kitchen (pictured). As they play with it nearly every day and imaginative play is something we highly encourage, it’s a worthwhile investment. Another larger ticket item worth the price tag is Mattel Disney Princess Castle. I was surprised with Amazon reviews since the kids play with and love this particular toy.

Other favorite toy notables include:

We’ll follow up with some of their favorite Learning Time products, but in the meantime would love to hear what toys your kids play with the most?

My Top 5 Creative Parenting Solutions

#1 Transition to Bottle

Problem: Baby refuses to transition from breastfeeding to bottle.

Solution: After trying different people, positions, bottles and every other trick in “the book,” we finally tried a tip my husband found on Babycenter.com. (Yes, we were desperate enough at that point as I was heading back to work that my husband was searching baby forums for answers.) What worked? Feeding our four month old a bottle in the tub. Eventually we had to wean from the tub since that became the only place she would drink a bottle, and the babysitter stubbornly refused to take a bath with her at every feeding. But it worked. No, that is not our tub pictured. Photo credit  idbest.com.

#2 Sleeping Through the Night

Problem: Baby is waking up multiple times a night and parents are exhausted.

Solution: Our first baby was 5-6 months old and getting up more than ever. Desperate one Saturday I called my sister-in-law, a mother of three, school psychologist, and parent I admire. She said, “You need to let her cry.” But I countered, “We do! Last night she cried for a full two minutes before I picked her up!” When she finished laughing her advice was to read Dr. Ferber’s book. “Read it,” she said, “don’t just let her cry. It gives you the rationale and strategies you’ll need.” I drove to Barnes & Noble (2006- pre-Kindle and iPad) and bought the book. It was the best parenting decision ever. Two babies sleeping through the night later, monsters aside, I’d highly recommend it to anyone.

#3 Potty Training

Problem: After taking forever to train our first child, we knew what to do with child number two.

Solution: Forever may be an exageration, but it didn’t feel like it at the time. I though potty training was the biggest parenting challenge and accidents became a regular part of our routine at one point. With the second toddler ready to train we had a few tricks up our sleeve. First, we waited for signs of potty training readiness. Next, we used the Little Looster to make it logistically easier for our tiny tot. Since #2 is a boy we used the Cheerio trick and also made sure not to ask “Do you need to use the potty?” but rather stated every hour, eventually extending the time, “It’s time to try the potty.” We also used a potty training app  and rewarded success with M&Ms. The result…weeks instead of months and our little guy was trained.

#3 Preschooler Discipline

Problem: Children who don’t always listen or share and need to find better solutions to hitting and “freaking out.”

Solution: I’ll start by clarifying that we haven’t licked this particular problem 100%. With two preschoolers 17 months apart, teaching sharing and creative solutions to anger is a daily lesson. One component to teaching appropriate behavior that has worked for us are Super Nanny’s reward charts. The kids do know our house rules and before “moving up” are very aware of the number rule they followed. Every day after a good report at school they move one space. We also love to catch them being good to ensure success.

#5 Bedroom Monsters

Problem: Preschool aged daughter is terrified to sleep in her bedroom due to monsters.

Solution: It started with Santa. For nearly two months after Christmas our daughter was afraid to sleep in her room terrified “Santa was there.” At one point there was a certifiable monster party: Ursula, crocodile from Peter Pan, Santa…they were all in there. After trying a myriad of solutions including (but not limited to) monster spray, a moster light and drawing the monsters and talking it out during the day, we finally purchased a fish tank last week after reading about this gem online. “Get a fish for something to focus on and calm them a bit.” After finding this Ariel Fish Tank, the family made a trip to Petsmart and  Nemo has done the trick! I did appreciate a colleague of mine pointing out that an Ariel tank was a fabulous idea given the Ursula monster issue.

May I Offer You a Spot of Tea? *Giveaway*

Tea Variety K-Cup® Sampler

I am a tea drinker. Morning…afternoon… sometimes even after dinner if I’m still hungry and want a snack alternative. So when this month’s shipment of K-Cup portion packs arrived, I was so excited to branch out a bit. Typiclly my tea drinking includes Celestial Seasonings Chai Tea and Bigelow English Breakfast Tea. When I can afford the extra calories Cafe Escapes Chai Tea Latte is my tea of choice. Being a K-Cup Ambassador has been interesting as I learn more about the companies I love such as family-owned Bigelow which began in a kitchen in 1945. To think Celestial Seasonings blended all-natural teas from herbs picked in the fields and forests of the Rocky Mountains in 1969 and more than 40 years later found it’s way into my kitchen each morning.

Though my collegues tease me about a 3rd cup every afternoon, I love post-lunch tea and was surprised to learn that the first afternoon tea was served at 4:00 pm when Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, grew tired of the “sinking feeling” between meals. I couldn’t wait to experience afternoon tea in England and love to re-create it just about every afternoon here in Pennsylvania.

If you’re a tea drinker and Keurig fan like myself, test your tea knowledge by answer the question below to enter to win a fun tea-themed prize pack.

Cool Giveaway:

Enter to win two mugs and two boxes of tea in K-Cup® packs by answering the following question correctly and making sure to leave an extra comment for each of the additional (optinal) entries. Tea originated in China and was brought to England in the 1500s, 1600s, 1700s or 1800s? Extra entry tasks:

The Case of the Missing Kraft MilkBites: Solved

I’m going to be honest. This was not the post I intended to write. When I first received Chocolate and Strawberry Kraft MilkBite Milk & Granola bars with a gift card to purchase additional granola bars for a test test, I did just that. Picking up our two favorite varieties of bars, I planned to use my husband as the tester (since I don’t blog my kids pics) and have some fun with it. In the meantime, I told him about the new bars and how good they were. Mistake #1.

In case you’re curious, MilkBites launch February 13th when everyone will get to try these delicious (yes, delicious) new bars which have milk in them…as much calcium as an 8 oz. glass as a matter of fact not to mention 5 grams of fiber.

Back to my story. Before being able to set the stage for the big taste test, my husband tried the Chocolate MilkBite and said “Hey, those bars are good. The best I’ve had actually.”  Then, they were gone. Before I could take photos of the boxes…before we could conduct the taste test, I reached into the fridge to grab a bar for breakfast on my way to work and GONZO. (Since they actually have milk the bars must be refrigerated which make them even better.) The MilkBite thief took them to work and actually had the gall to blame me. “You’re constantly telling me I need to eat breakfast.” He chooses this moment to listen to me?

So we’re left with a stock photo of a flavor I didn’t actually try (but will) and my story of the new milk and granola bars that quickly became a household favorite for our family and likely yours too when you get your hands on them. Available soon in your local grocery store or my husband’s office.

Update: He’s at it again…
