A Cool New Educational Toy Find–Twisterz *Giveaway*

If you haven’t yet heard of Twisterz, there’s a good chance you will. But remember, Cool Baby Kid is brining it to you first! Readers know we love educational toys that help kids learn while having fun at the same time. Twisterz offer just that, a neat new twist on learning the alphabet, matching, story building and more. Each ring on a tube twists allowing little hands to match pictures which begin with particular letter sounds. Or, with the Word Builder, they can build words between two and six letters long. The Story Starter could even be used in classrooms to give students writing prompts and ideas since it also encourages parts of a story, such as introductions, which is a valuable lesson for young writers.

Branded Scholastic Twizterz include WordGirl™ Word Builder and Clifford Category Matcher which add familiar faces to a new learning activity. Each Twizterz comes with additional rings; the tube’s end is removable allowing users to interchange letters, words and more for seemingly infinite learning possibilities. Find out where to purchase Twizterz or enter our giveaway for a chance to win three sets including the Alphabet Matcher, Story Starter and Word Builder. Seeing is believing, so be sure to visit their YouTube channel to see for yourself how it works. Alphabet Matcher by Twisterz Toys LLC was selected as one of the 100 Best Children’s Products for 2010 by Dr. Toy for a reason–it’s a great product which we’re happy to have discovered.

New Craze Alert: Gomu Collectable Erasers

I love to be at the forefront of a new hit, and without a doubt the world of Gomu Eraserland is going to be big! There are over a 100 different Gomu by Spin Master erasers to collect from including categories of pets, gadgets and zoo animals. Recommended for kids ages 6+ they start at less than $1 making Gomu a perfect price range for kids to buy themselves or as gifts for birthday parties or when the holidays hit as stocking stuffers.

Each Gomu is assignet points…more points for rarer Gomu erasers. Keep track of your collection on the website which automatically adds your points when you check off a new collectible. Personally, I just think they are cute. They even come apart and can be “used” as my daughter is a fan of putting on her no-so-real nailpolish. Which, I might add, is much less messy than the real stuff.

My First LEGO Set: Let the Cleanup Begin…

Now that my babies have passed through toddlerhood into their pre-school years, I finally felt comfortable to allow LEGO play, although it turns out LEGO® DUPLO® and LEGO Bricks could would have been perfect for the kids at a younger age.  The fact that Brick Sets were launched in 1950 shows you I am most certainely a secondary and not primary teacher! My family started with My First LEGO® Set and already added to the collection. Of course the kids love LEGO as I knew they would; my son gravitates directly to the LEGO table during our mom and me class at school.

Aside from the fact that LEGO is simply fun for kids, their long history of learning through play from the World People Set (launched 1989) to LEGO® MINDSTORMS® and educations centers is well documented. After visiting their booth at the 2011 Toy Fair, I definitely have a few personal favorites:

The LEGO site is packed with games for all ages where you can also create your own LEGO page, join the LEGO club and much more. For additional cool picks, subscribe to CBK via RSS or email and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

Packit Personal Cooler Stays Cool *Giveaway*

As a parent you’ve likely used carry coolers dozens of times. For baby bottles, lugging snacks, school lunches for the kids or your own lunch for work. Packit solves a simple problem by eliminating the need for an ice pack that inevitably melts. With built-in cooling for up to 10 hours, the personal cooler stays cool…just unfold and go. I used it recently on a day trip to keep apples and juice boxes cool, and Packit delivered. I plan to snag it for myself for work since I tend to eat healthier when packing my lunch, but it comes in handy for the kids as well. Eight cool styles with another eight on their way shortly, including the Polka Dot pattern pictured, make it a stylish way to pack and go. Invented by two single moms on a mission, Packit is simple but effective which we know Cool Baby Kid readers love.

Game Night Pick: Jigazo Puzzle by Hasbro

Since the newest puzzle innovation from Hasbro, Ji Ga Zo, was out of our children’s age range, we had the Cool Baby Kid review team check it out. While our kids love puzzles, at two and four this was a bit beyond their years at 300 pieces (recommended for ages 8 and up.)  Essentially you upload a digital picture and let the software figure out the unique puzzle placement creating any picture you can imagine because of it’s unique colors and shading. The kit includes a CD-ROM with software and instructions, 300 puzzle pieces and assembly grid.

Our reviewers liked that it was easy to install on the computer.  The girls, ages 11 and 14, installed Ji Ga Zo themselves and  were excited about the concept. They found it very easy to operate and said the instructions were very clear.  After printing the puzzle they felt it was very easy to put together.  The printable map feature and pictures on the back of the pieces made completing the puzzle very enjoyable, and the girls “had loads of fun doing it.”  They loved the ability to do it again and again with another picture–”awesome.”

Guest Author: Kate Boehm Jerome, “Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know”

There’s a wonderful exhibit at the Baylor University Medical Center in Texas thatgives “hands-on” a new meaning. It’s the Adrian E. Flatt, M.D., Hand Exhibit and it shows life-size models of more than 100 pairs of “famous” hands—including the digits of Walt Disney and Dr. Seuss! When my grown son read this interesting bit of trivia in my Dallas: Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know book, he immediately suggested a road trip might be in order. Seriously.

Fact is, when most kids hit grade school they naturally start to gravitate toward the real world phenomena found in non-fiction books. Both of my children moved through different periods of expertise when they were young. One was an expert on sharks for awhile. The other? Definitely the neighborhood’s “go-to” guy on all things ninja. Reading for information is an important skill for kids to master. Parents can help by offering age-appropriate non-fiction choices. Look for books with colorful photos and informative captions. For beginners, try offering a book with smaller chunks of text that are easier to digest. Heads that ask questions are also helpful to guide the reader through the page. Above all…zero in on your child’s interests! Who knows? Today’s caterpillar queen might be tomorrow’s expert entomologist!

Kate Boehm Jerome is the author of Cool Stuff Every Kid Should Know, a series of books on U.S. cities (Charleston, Dallas, Houston, Tampa, Orlando and others) published by Arcadia Publishing.
