LeapFrog Numberland DVD Review & Giveaway

Scout and friends are baaack! As a Language Arts teacher, I favor an approach to learning which incorporates a variety of contest and multiple modes of delivering that content. We read, play games and utilize educational toys and technology such as the LeapFrog DVD learning series. My son, age 3, can already read which I absolutely attribute in part to the fantastic line of LeapFrog products ranging from Fridge Words to Phonics Farm.  This new release focuses on numberacy skills as Scout plans a surprise birthday party along with friends Violet, Eli, Penny and Axle. We use reward charts to reinforce our house rules and used Numberland as the Pirate Ship surprise. The kids were as excited about it as any prize they received and couldn’t wait to watch the newest LeapFrog release. To me this speaks volumes; when learning masks as fun everyone’s a winner! I would highly recommend both LeapFrog Numberland and other LeapFrog DVDs which are listed below to any parent looking to reinforce skills taught in the home.

Stocking Stuffer Idea: Barbie A Perfect Christmas DVD *Giveaway*

Why We Love It

Our five year old is just getting into Barbie having received one for her birthday this year. As a child, Barbie was my favorite toy so there’s a high nostalgia factor as her first Barbie and Ken come to life our kitchen as they have “tea parties” at their very own table. As a recent pre-bedtime treat we watched the all-new Barbie A Perfect Christmas DVD starring Barbie  and her three sisters- Skipper, Stacy and Chelsea- embarke on a holiday adventure. Without giving too much away, their planned vacation is detored by a snowstorm and through series of fun, unexpected events the girls learn the true meaning of Christmas (religion aside). They realize the importance of family and being together for the holidays, and we used it as an opportunity to reinforce those same lessons. “We’lll be with everyone for Christmas–Nonnie, Grampa Mont, Aunt Jena, Uncle Billy”– and so on. Using the heartwarming DVD as a springboard for talking about family was an added bonus.

Barbie A Perfect Christmas is available at all major retailers or through our Barbie Amazon link.

All New LeapFrog Learning: Phonics Farm & 3-DVD Set

It’s not a surprise that LeapFrog’s Phonics Farm DVD was an instant hit for my son who loves every LeapFrog toy he’s ever got his hands on.  I think his favorites are Fridge Phonics and Text & Learn which followed him everywhere for about a year.  It’s possible he enjoyed the DVD so much because he had a stuffed Scout when he was an infant. In any case, he was instantly engaged in the DVD, answering the characters and conversing with the television.  The story involves Scout, Violet, Eli, & Penny who take a trip to the farm and meet a lot of new animals.  It’s great when a cartoon can help reinforce information critical to early reading.  Our son is already very interested in the alphabet, letter sounds and sight words so the DVD was a great fit.  At 35 minutes, Phonics Farm is great for car trips and helps reinforce the sounds of the letters we are currently teaching.

With the holidays next month, the newley released LeapFrog 3-DVD Learning Collection makes a great gifts for youngsters ages 2-5. It includes  The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park and Number Ahoy which we reviewed when they were first released. Lily, Tad and friends teach numbers, countings the alphabet and more. In  Learn to Read at the Storybook Factory our favorite  friends combine learning (to read) and fun in true LeapFrog fashion. We keep the LeapFrog DVDs in the car for travel; even a fifteen minute trip can be an opportinity to learn!

Disney’s “The Lion King” Diamond Edition Blu-ray + DVD *Oct. 4th Release*

Before Princess and the Frog, The Lion King was my personal favorite Disney film. Although the phenomenal music of Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid is undisputed, the story of Simba leaving home to find himself and returning with the support of old and new friends is a classic tale. Having seen both the Broadway and off-Broadway Lion King Musicals and being a fan of both, I was excited to learn it would be returning to the big screen in Disney Digital 3D. Now also available in Blu-ray high def and Blu-ray 3D as a part of Disney’s Diamond Collection, Lion King fans have a whole new medium to view their favorite characters like Pumba and Timon and songs such as “Circle of Life.”

Spectacular graphics and fun extras make this a worthwhile purchase for your family or as a gift…the holidays are coming! We especially loved the bloopers (which makes me wonder if the voices make mistakes that are then drawn…how does that work?) There’s also an entire gallery of drawings, storyboards and enough behind the scenes footage to make any Lion King fan happy. Learn about Disney Digital copies which are fantastic to get your movies on the go…iPhone, iPad, the works…as well as Second Screen which turns the movie into an interactive iPad adventure.

Top Five “Get Ready for School” DVDs *Giveaway*

Rock 'N Learn Sight Words

Kids learn all pre-primer Dolch words, the top 20 from Fry's, and more in this engaging DVD from Rock 'N Learn who also offer a host of learning DVDs for pre-school, kindergarten and more. Our kids have been watching Sight Words in the car and just love it. Learning masked as fun makes this a top pick.

LeapFrog Sing & Learn with Us!

The "Us!" in the title refers to the band with whom little ones will sing and learn 12 songs focused on short vowel sounds. I love being able print compatible, printable sing-along storybooks and 3 coloring sheets as well. Another LeapFrog winner.

The Laurie Berkner Bands: Party Day!

A birthday party adventure...sing along songs...getting ready for school? Yes. Following directions plays an important role in early childhood education, and we love to play and have fun while learning basic social skills at the same time.

Rock 'N Learn: Getting Ready for Kindergarten

While we didn't actually test-drive this DVD, this is an especially nerve-wracking time for parents. The DVD looks great for kids. "The two characters on the DVD take the viewer through life skills like setting the table...pre-academic skills...as well as social/play skills like playing with blocks and following directions."

LeapFrog: Let's Go to School

Released in 2009, we reviewed a while back and still enjoy this DVD, especially now with school once again looming. Tad and Lily, familiar characters to LeapFrog fans, lead lessons about phonics, counting, days of the week and animals.

Top Ten Disney DVD Picks *Giveaway*

Tangled

One of our most recent favorites, Tangled is a delightful tale with Mandy Moore spot on as Rapunzel; our son can even mimic the Flynn Ryder smolder.

Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue

Undoubtedly ever time our daughter watches this film she ends up with her wings on flying through the house. Great story line.

The Little Mermaid

This happens to be the current favorite in our house. My younger sister and daughter...two generations of Ariel lovers. Music in this is top-notch.

Beauty and the Beast

This Blu-ray combo pack is filled with extras for Belle lovers. A "Movie Monday" favorite, the soundtrack is as enjoyable each time we hear it.

Aladdin

The Platinum Edition marked Aladdin's first time on DVD. We're lucky enough to own a this classic Disney favorite. Get out your magic carpets!

The Lion King

When the Diamond Edition is released October 2011, we'll be the first in line since this was my personal favorite before Princess and the Frog.

Princess and the Frog

My personal top DIsney movie pick, Princess and the Frog felt like an instance classic with a heroine young princess hopefuls could look up to.

Disney's Cars

As we look forward to Cars 2 on June 24, 2011, reruns of the original will have to suffice. Once of the only "non-princess" hits in our house.

Finding Nemo

This was one of the first movies the kids watched in it's entirety. And after hanging with Crush at Walt Disney World, they love this classic even more!

Sleeping Beauty

Until recently being usurped by Ariel, Sleeping Beauty was our daughter's favorite princess. An oldie but goodie, Aurora and "Once Upon a Dream" is still a top pick.
