JumpStart 3D Virtual World: 6 Month Membership Giveaway

We’ve reviewed both the JumpStart® Virtual World and Wii games in the past and keep coming back to it as an editor’s pick as a top choice for educational games for kids. Completely customizable to your child ages 3-10, both free and paid options are available with a wider assortment of games and customizable features offered with a paid membership. As an educator, it is clear the future of education lies in the utilization of technology for learning, and JumpStart from Knowledge Adventure® has tapped into a way to seamlessly combine learning and fun.

One new feature allows user to link their JumpStart and Facebook accounts giving them the capability to find friends and link to play. Membership costs $7.95/month, $74.99/year or $149.99/lifetime. There are so many features it’s impossible to highlight even a fraction of what JumpStart has going on, but we’ll try anyway. My daughter loves the Skate-O-Rama and putting on a jumpsuit to launch from the Launch Pad. But her absolute favorite is swimming and will go out of her way to cross every waterway and stream she can find. Earning coins to spend on cool new threads, I help her “shop” and will admit to taking the mouse from her every once in a while…to guide her of course.

The educational integration at every turn along with fun adventures, interactivity and customization make this a winner with new games each month and new features being added all of the time. Like the Wii game, JumpStart for your computer is one way to let a preschooler spend some time navigating technology in a positive forum.

The First Years True Fit™ Rebound Convertible Car Seat

When shopping for a car seat there are only really two considerations for us: safety and functionality. The First Years True Fit™ Rebound Convertible Car Seat is the only car seat out there with an anti-rebound bar which lessens the “bounce” after initial impact and actually prevent broken bones in a serious crash. It is also side impact and was given a 5-star NHTSA rating for rear and forward facing modes for ease-of-use which is apparent in many ways. The seat is equipped with a built-in level, built in lock-offs and a LATCH system for both the rear and forward facing positions and is super easy to adjust because the 5-point harnesses do not need to be re-threaded.

One of my favorite features of this car seat are the pads. There are enough of them to tightly secure an infant and they can be easily removed for a larger child or to be cleaned. Did I mention that the pads even look good? They are gender neutral and will look perfect in a minivan or Mercedes. As if all of these features were not enough the True Fit Premier can hold a child from 5 to 65 pounds which is great since this is one of those baby items that will last longer than a month. Overall I would strongly encourage anyone who is car seat shopping to consider the True Fit Premier for all of these reasons.

Baby Kid Bookshelf: Books for Preschoolers {Second Edition}

The Best Family in the World by Susana Lopez

Publisher: Kane Miller Ages: 3-8

Children are born inquisitive, and my little guys, ages 3 and 5, sure did have plenty of questions after reading The Best Family in the World, written by Susana Lopez, and illustrated by Ulises Wensell . This is a sweet story about a little girl named Carlota who dreams of who will adopt her. As she anxiously awaits the arrival of her very own family, Carlota can’t sleep, and so she fantasizes about what her new family might be like. Will they be pastry chefs, or pirates?

The fact that Carlota lives in an orphanage, and is being adopted was what inspired so many questions from my curious kiddos. I found delight in the way they tried to wrap their minds around the concept, and came to an understanding of a new perspective on family. I was thrilled to discuss this tender topic with them in the hopes that they’ll be all the better for it. My kindhearted 5 year old daughter expressed sympathy and concern for Carlota at first, but in turn felt assurance that Carlota’s new family is wonderful and loves her no less than if she had been their biological child. Overall, Lopez created a cute story which was artfully woven to include a lesson about an important topic.

My Father Knows the Names of Things by Jane Yolen

Publisher: Simon & Schuster Ages 4-8

My Father Knows the Names of Things is a story about a young boy that discovers no matter where he goes with his

father he can learn from his dad. His father can identify the names of different cheese, names of dogs, and seven words that all mean blue. When they travel outside, his father can categorize insects by their bodily characteristics, the name of different fish when sailing, and different kinds of clouds. This is a great book for sons and their fathers.

Baby Kid Bookshelf: Books for Preschooler {Giveaway}

Mattoo, Let’s Play by Irene Luxbacher

Publisher: Kids Can Press Ages: 3-7

What happens when a shy cat and its exuberant owner cross paths? Ruby learns, with the help of her gentle friends Clemente, to win the affection of her cat, Ruby. “Shhh! say Clemente. We have to be quiet or we’ll scare all the animals.” We love the illustrations with black and white backgrounds and colorful characters, highlighting the contrast between the personalities of each. Mattoo and Ruby are delightful!

Looking Closely Around The Pond by Frank Serafini

Publisher: Kids Can Press Ages: 3-8

Looking Closely Around the Pond by Frank Serafini, part of The Looking Closely series, caught both of my children’s attention. In fact, they loved it! This children’s book is playfully arranged in the form of a guessing game where the reader must inspect a close-up photograph and try to imagine what it might be. My kids enjoyed making predictions and then flipping the pages to discover a variety of interesting plants and animals that live in pond ecosystems. I am a true believer that children love (and need) wild places. I love the fact that this book encourages children to “look closely” at the details around them, and to appreciate and respect our natural world. I’ll surly look for other books in the series to add to my own collection.

Chester Raccoon and the Acorn Full of Memories by Audrey Penn

Publisher: Tanglewood Press Ages: 3-8

NY Times #1 bestselling author, Audrey Penn, just has a way of writing that pulls on my heart strings. Her fifth book in the Chester Raccon/Kissing Hand series on life issues for children, Chester Racoon and the Acorn Full of Memories, is especially relevant for anyone who has children who have experienced the loss of a friend or loved one. Penn’s charming story, although about a heavy topic, remains positive as it helps children understand the purpose behind creating a memorial, or even holding memorial services and funerals. It’s a beautiful story that I know will have a lasting impact on its precious, young reader as he or she tries to understand and make sense of a fatality, which is often incomprehensible to even adults.The colorful, vibrant illustrations by Barbara Leonard Gibson are just fabulous.If given only one word to describe this book, I’d have to say…touching!

Baby Kid Bookshelf: New Books for Baby & Toddler

Good Night, Little Bunny By Jane Yolen

Publisher: Simon & Schuster Ages 1-4

Good Night, Little Bunny is a touch and feel bedtime story about a baby bunny preparing to go to bed. Each page has a different texture for the baby to touch. The moon is shiny and smooth, the bunnies pajama’s are soft, the toothbrush bristles are scratchy, the bedtime story has a fuzzy lamb, and lastly when the bunny goes to sleep his head is a soft patch for your child to feel.

Passing By by Yona Tepper

Publisher: Kane Miller Ages: 2-5

Little girl Yale watches the comings and goings from her balcony in a question answer format perfect for making predictions. We ask, “What do you think she will see next?” Coming from a rural neighborhood, we can glimpse into city life as the main character views her world from above. Our favorite part of the story, though, is the end when Yale sees her dad coming home from work. Kids can identify with this scene as they are immersed into city life with Passing By.

Andy and Sam Hide-and Seek By Liesbet Slegers

Publisher: Kane Miller Ages 3-5

Andy and Sam is an interactive book for young children. Andy is a young boy and his cat Sam go on daily adventures from a farm, to the zoo, on the beach, and finally back home again. At each location, Andy will ask questions about the picture. First, kids must find Sam the cat, who is hiding somewhere in each picture. Then Andy asks questions about the picture from counting the number of elephants at the zoo to where does Andy store his seashells in his room. Andy also asks questions about animal preferences, who likes the cold, to what is tickling his mother’s foot on the beach.

Boom Bah By Phil Cummings

Publisher: Kane Miller Ages 3-5

Boom Bah is an adorable story about a variety of animals that begin to create a marching band with a variety of household objects. As this makeshift band sets out they run into a real marching band in uniforms with real instruments marching down a road. The animals are awestruck and join in the marching as the band moves along the country road. This is a great book for young children beginning to read as it both incorporate sounds into their reading and allows young readers to play with words as they follow the animals’ stories.

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and one mother of three decided to forgo tape and sharipe pens for a more stylish solution. Beyond the Atractions: Disney World with Preschoolers {Book}

We’re going to Disney World! Though we’ve been before for a day here or there, this summer we are finally making a full week family vacation and could not be more excited. So when approached to review Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers by Lisa A. Battista, it could not have been a more perfect fit. A Walt Disney World guide book specifically written for preschoolers, we were especially happy that she advocated taking this younger age group to Disney since we were slightly worried about jumping the gun. Everyone who plans a Disney trip wonders, are they too young…too old…just the right age? The answer is, of course, any age is the perfect age to visit Disney World with proper planning! This guide is inclusive enough to offer precise details on everything from packing and dining in Disney with younger travelers. I read it cover to cover in one sitting, though using it as a guide is just as valuable. There are also updates on the website in case any information changes or is added since the book was purchased. The author is obviously knowledgeable about Dinsey and having covered many bases between the book and website. is a Beyond the Attractionsmust for any family planning a trip to Disney with young children.
