LeapFrog Numberland DVD Review & Giveaway

Scout and friends are baaack! As a Language Arts teacher, I favor an approach to learning which incorporates a variety of contest and multiple modes of delivering that content. We read, play games and utilize educational toys and technology such as the LeapFrog DVD learning series. My son, age 3, can already read which I absolutely attribute in part to the fantastic line of LeapFrog products ranging from Fridge Words to Phonics Farm.  This new release focuses on numberacy skills as Scout plans a surprise birthday party along with friends Violet, Eli, Penny and Axle. We use reward charts to reinforce our house rules and used Numberland as the Pirate Ship surprise. The kids were as excited about it as any prize they received and couldn’t wait to watch the newest LeapFrog release. To me this speaks volumes; when learning masks as fun everyone’s a winner! I would highly recommend both LeapFrog Numberland and other LeapFrog DVDs which are listed below to any parent looking to reinforce skills taught in the home.

Top Five “Get Ready for School” DVDs *Giveaway*

Rock 'N Learn Sight Words

Kids learn all pre-primer Dolch words, the top 20 from Fry's, and more in this engaging DVD from Rock 'N Learn who also offer a host of learning DVDs for pre-school, kindergarten and more. Our kids have been watching Sight Words in the car and just love it. Learning masked as fun makes this a top pick.

LeapFrog Sing & Learn with Us!

The "Us!" in the title refers to the band with whom little ones will sing and learn 12 songs focused on short vowel sounds. I love being able print compatible, printable sing-along storybooks and 3 coloring sheets as well. Another LeapFrog winner.

The Laurie Berkner Bands: Party Day!

A birthday party adventure...sing along songs...getting ready for school? Yes. Following directions plays an important role in early childhood education, and we love to play and have fun while learning basic social skills at the same time.

Rock 'N Learn: Getting Ready for Kindergarten

While we didn't actually test-drive this DVD, this is an especially nerve-wracking time for parents. The DVD looks great for kids. "The two characters on the DVD take the viewer through life skills like setting the table...pre-academic skills...as well as social/play skills like playing with blocks and following directions."

LeapFrog: Let's Go to School

Released in 2009, we reviewed a while back and still enjoy this DVD, especially now with school once again looming. Tad and Lily, familiar characters to LeapFrog fans, lead lessons about phonics, counting, days of the week and animals.

Two New LeapFrog Learning DVDs *Giveaway*

Turns out LeapFrog: The Amazing Alphabet Amusement Park and LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy which both hit shelves in January appeal to a range of age groups. As regular Cool Baby Kid readers know, we are huge LeapFrog fans and credit some of their educational products to helping the kids learn letters, letter sounds and more.  We jumped at the chance to check out the new DVDs.  In Alphabet Amusement Park, Tad, Lily and Scout work together to save their firefly friend Edison from the Amazing Alphabet Ferris Wheel by learning letters big and small. Some children may already be familiar with LeapFrog’s Scout; my son sleeps with him each night which made it fun to see him on the big screen.

Alternatively, in LeapFrog: Numbers Ahoy the gang helps rescue Scout who was captured by a pirate using their new number skills. Pirate Pythagoras and other underwater creatures are no match for Tad, Lily and their friend Edison. Car rides are a perfect opportunity for learning, and on a recent trip to the Crayola Factory, even my sister couldn’t help join in the learning fun (see video below). I had to draw the line when she tried to smuggle the DVDs back to law school with her though. The kids enjoy them too much.

HIT Entertainment Video Roundup: New and Noteworthy

Does your child love Thomas the Train? Does your child love the water? Well, this is the DVD for you. Join Thomas and friends on some great adventures through puddles, ponds, and even a little splashing game. This DVD has fantastic animation. HIT Entertainment really outdid themselves with the CGI Animation; it feels like you are in the movies. The characters are so realistic. My toddler loved that Thomas looked as though he was taking to him. He loved to meet the new engine, Charlie, and have a sloppy car race with Sir Topham Hat. The Splish, Splash, Splosh Thomas the Train DVD includes great music your children will enjoy, and of course, lessons that make parents proud. Included on this DVD is a game with the Crane and a counting game with Thomas, both educational and enjoyable for your children. The Splish, Splash, Splosh may be one of my favorites yet from the Thomas collection. It gives my son hours of fun, and I have to admit, I did enjoy watching these adventures myself. I recommend to parents who have toddlers and to anyone who know a child that loves Thomas the Train.

If your child is a Bob the Builder fan, the Best of Bob the Builder is a must. This DVD has hours of adventures, never before seen stories, and bonus feature games. Your child will enjoy 10 of the best episodes of “Bob the Builder” over the past 10 years. Bob and all his friends, Roley, Scoop, Lofty and Muck, Dizzy, and more have loads of fun and learn some important lessons along the way. My favorite episode is when Dizzy goes camping. My son loved that one. I think this episode would be great to have your toddler watch or bring along for their first camping trip. If your child is a builder, then “The House that Lofty built” is the episode for them. My son started to take out his blocks and build his own house after that one. I would recommend this DVD to all the “Bob the Builder” fans for hours of enjoyment.
Barney’s Let’s Grow: Lend a Helping Hand is a hit with our travel DVD player. I love how this DVD includes Kelly and Chica from the Sprout network. My toddler really thinks of the comforts of home with these familiar characters. We always take it along for some smooth travel. All your favorites are rolled into one, Barney, Bob the Builder, Thomas & Friends, Fireman Sam, and Angelina Ballerina–which makes this DVD a success with both boys and girls. Let’s Grow: Lend a Helping Hand has your child’s favorite characters going on adventures where they need to help others. With Barney and Baby Bop, your children will learn how important it is to clean up after themselves–LOVE IT!! They will learn about the importance of recycling with Kelly and Chica. They even learn more about correct ways to clean up as well as the importance of working together with Bob the Builder and Friends as they get ready for the Grand Opening–of what you ask–I won’t spoil the surprise. This DVD has more adventures with Thomas the Train, Fireman Sam, and Angelina Ballerina–all with lessons on how important helping others can be.

Hip Hop Baby: Fun, Educational DVDs for Kids

As a mom to a two year old, I know it can be tough finding shows that interest our young ones and keep them engaged. When my little guy watches television I not only want it to entertain him but I also like for it to encourage learning and It’s Hip Hop BabyThings We Do Everyday” on DVD does just that. The “Things We Do Everyday” DVD is intended for ages 2-6 and teaches children through fun hip hop music that’s child-friendly. It’s Hip Hop Baby was founded by Candi Carter, a mom who wanted to help her son learn faster. She discovered that children respond and learn quicker when music and movement are used in the learning process so she created It’s Hip Hop Baby to educate young children with the help of hip hop music. Candi has an amazing background in her television career including working at CNN in Atlanta, GA and later producing news specials and children’s programming at WISN TV (the ABC Affiliate in Milwaukee, WI). While there she won an Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Programming. The “Things We Do Everyday” DVD encourages reading, teaches children to follow simple directions, encourages dance and movement, helps children master concepts such as repetition and rhyming, and also teaches children hip hop dance. My little guy watches the WHOLE show every time I turn it on and even tries to copy some of their simple and fun hip hop moves. We’ve also really enjoyed listening to the Hip Hop Baby “Fruit!” CD in the car on the way to my daughter’s school or to the grocery store. The CD is loaded with 29 educational songs that are catchy and simple making it easy for young children to remember the lyrics.
