YBike Extreme: Promotes Balance and Fun *Giveaway*

The new YBike Extreme is a promising find for promoting balance.  After spending the summer with my three and five year old progressing beyond their big wheels and moving onto their first two wheel bikes, of course with training wheels.  I witnessed their hesitation and fear of falling even with training wheels and often wondered, “How can I possibly remove the training wheels?”  I now have hope thanks to YBike that a safe orderly transition to a two wheel bike may be possible.  The YBike is designed for 3 to 5 year olds and works perfectly on our carpeted basement and although our carpet is plush, the YBike Extreme easily moves across it. We chose the extreme model because our kids are a little older and also because the extreme works well off road.

The standard model has a wider rear wheel and therefore seems to be a little easier to balance. Assembly was very easy and only took about 15 minutes; no tools required.  Both kids have been experimenting riding back and forth across the basement and are truly enjoying their new YBike.  In a week’s time I have seen their balance improve with longer and faster movements.  I am confident that by next year, they will be able to balance, and I’ll be able to remove their training wheels. My only job will be to teach them to peddle.  Thanks YBike for putting my mind at ease.

Chatting with Dr. Oz: Mammography Guidelines, Hand Sanitizer Safety, and Is H1N1 Vaccine Safe for Kids?

Today we had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Oz about keeping our families healthy this holiday season. Dr. Oz is both the star the Dr. Oz show on NBC each afternoon as well as the co-author of the You series of books.

New Mammography Guidelines

What does Dr. Oz think about the new guidelines? Tune in Monday as they offer a special look at this hot topic!

Hand Sanitizers

The biggest danger with hand sanitizers is in swallowing it. Soap and water is the best method for keeping clean, but hand sanitizers–alcohol based as opposed to anit-bacterial–are the next best option and better than coming into contact with germs.

Portion Control Tip

Watch alcohol and food intake over the holidays. Never walk around with both hand full. Be sure one is open to exchange greetings, and alternate alcohol with water which prevents overdoing it.

Flu & H1N1 Vaccine

If you feel the regular flu shot is safe then get the H1N1 shot for your children. Getting sufficient sleep and physical activity is important to boost the immune system. Obesity is immune suppressant so eating healthy. Natural options for keeping flu at bay for parents? Vitamin D and North American Ginseng for adults and broccoli for the whole family.

Staying Healthy on Airplanes

Because of air circulation the person one seat over and behind you receive the effects. One tip…put on air vent low above your head and aim it just below the chest and be sure to clean off the table in front of you with an anti-bacterial wipe. For hotels, take off the comforter since it is full of germs and either clean the remote control or put it in a plastic bag since it is full of germs.

Minimize Stress Over the Holidays

Get more sleep! Many people skip sleep at this time of year, so be sure to receive 7 to 7.5 hours each night. And a few minutes of stretching or focusing to re-set yourself each morning (yoga, mediation, exercise, etc.) is important to practice mental resilience. Exercising early in the day, though the first few minutes can be tough, is a great way to get yourself ready for the day.

Emotional Eating

Take 100 calories less per day than you would have otherwise is one simple strategy to get rid of the weight you would have otherwise gained.

My personal impression of Dr. Oz…this guy knows his stuff! Ask a question yourself or tune in to Oprah and Cool Baby Kid’s favorite doctor on call.

Moving Comfort Sports Bra: Best Front Zip We’ve Found

Since July 2009, I’ve dropped 25 lbs. and am trying to get in the best shape of my life and am documenting it on From Potty Training to Weight Training. I figured with two little ones in two years it was time for this mom to get her grove back. Spending six days a week in the gym, I’m spending a ton of time in a sports bra and wanted to share my favorite since great ones are not easy to come by. I’ve also been running for a few years, and my main complaint was getting the thing on and especially off after a sweaty workout. Front zip sports bras tend to come undone. This stinks on a run but is definitely not good in a public gym or aerobics class. The Moving Comfort Grace bra not only stays zipped by supports terrifically; what more can you ask for in a sports bra? Coolmax gives it breathability as well. A little background- Moving Comfort was created by two women in 1977 looking for shorts which fit women as well as men. Focusing on woman’s comfort in sports for over 30 years is evident in their product.

Daisy Fuentes Pilates for Wii: Change Up Your Fitness Routine

From Potty Training to Weight Training is a new blog which chronicles my journey from post-pregnancy to Figure (bodybuilding) competition. One of the struggles I’ve mentioned there is getting bored with the same old routines. As a runner who is new venturing into bodybuilding, I’ve tried many forms of exercise but never Pilates. So when receiving Daisy Fuentes Pilates, the first of it’s kind for Wii, I was particularly interested in learning about this new genre of fitness for me. It’s appeal is obvious from the start…with soothing music and scenes that make you want to immediately book a trip to some exotic location, the core-strengthening activities range from beginner to advanced with various programs such as single exercises to workout sets. The start screen gives users the option to tour the resort or head directly to the workout center. You can also head to Daisy’s office for tips or to change her outfit (neat) or the Guest Hut to track your progress. With the ability to choose both the exercises such as the bicycle or leg circle and locations like the pool or spa, there is an incredible about of customization. On the flip side, there are a limited number of exercises which works for me, a casual user who likes to vary my routines but may not work for a more serious pilates fan. Overall, if you’re looking for some variety, inner peace and feel like you don’t vacation enough as you should, Daisy Fuentes Pilates is a great addition to your Wii fitness collection.

Smart Tips: Daisy Fuentes Pilates gives real-time feedback and healthy diet tips in English and Spanish and can be used with the Wii Remote and the optional Wii Balance Board too.

My Gym at Home with Monique: Workout for Mom AND Baby

My Gym at Home: Fun with Monique is a great fitness DVD for babies and toddlers. The DVD features episodes of the My Gym at Home television that airs on BabyFirstTV, a commercial-free child development channel designed for babies, toddlers and parents. Hosted by Monique Vranesh, My Gym at Home allows mommy and baby to work put together. It is designed for children 3 and under and helps the development of motor skills, flexibility and social skills. We were sent the Sensory Wonderland DVD to review and all 3 of my children participated with me. While I was more focused on my 11 month old, my 3 year old and 5 year old followed along. Monique is very energetic and you can almost feel her enthusiasm through the television. Peyton was really intrigued by all the bright colors. The constantly changing screen shots help to keep the attention of the younger age group quite well. Peyton sat in my lap and we followed along with the TV. He really enjoyed peek-a-boo and being tickled. The DVD introduces you and your children to exercises and stretches you can do from home. We practiced stretching, headstands, balance, stability and rolling on a fitness ball. My children loved the all the songs too. It really encourages them to follow along and just have fun. You can purchase My Gym at Home: Fun with Monique at Target, Borders, Barnes & Noble or online at BabyFirstTV for $15.95. Also find a My Gym in your area at www.my-gym.com.
