A Lucky Leaf Dinner Party: From Dinner to Dessert

Caramel Apple Cheesecake

This Fall I was lucky enough to visit the Musselman’s Orchards and learned that Knouse Foods, a grower owned cooperative, also owns a brand our family uses and loves! I’ve been using Lucky Leaf since receiving a Dump Cake recipe a few years ago since their pie fillings are at the heart of this simple go-to recipe which transforms pumpkin, apple, blueberry or cherry filling and dry cake mix into a yummy dessert. Back in 1949 Lucky Leaf and applesauce went hand in hand. These days just about every flavor filling can be found under the Lucky Leaf label, including Lite varieties as well.

Last weekend three families gathered for our monthly “Gourmet Club,” with Lucky Leaf and Halloween taking center stage. Using their apple pie filling, I made a Caramel Apple Cheesecake which was a huge hit.  With an extensive recipe section, Lucky Leaf goes beyond desserts with non-complicated creations such as the Sweet & Hot Slow Cooker Pork which I can personally vouch for…yum! Users can search the site for recipes based on product or type. As a huge fan of Sandra Lee and semi-homemade meals and dinner party ideas, the Lucky Leaf brand offers a similar style mixing great tasting dishes with the ease of semi-prepared ingredients.  Though I’m admittedly biased having connected with the great folks at Musselman’s, without a doubt I’ll be using more Lucky Leaf Premium pie fillings this Fall.

Cool Tip: Throwing a virtual Lucky Leaf pie in the face of a friend is a fun way to recipe share; you can even throw a Facebook pie too. While I haven’t tried it, I threw the Like Lucky Leaf on Facebook for more tips and recipes.

*A Day at the Orchard* with Musselman’s and Knouse Foods

There are a handful of companies that, for me, stand out from the crowd. Ones to which I’m brand loyal and spotlight on Cool Baby Kid over and over again. Companies I’m proud to promote with products our family uses on a regular basis. Musselman’s is one of those brands, and not simply because they reside in my home state of PA. Starting with the fact that my picky daughter actually eats Musselman’s applesauce, there’s so much to love. I was recently lucky enough to visit this grower-owned cooperative who uses 100% American-grown apples in their products.  It’s no coincidence, however, since Musselman’s has been a part of our family long before I’ve partnered with them on Cool Baby Kid.

A “Day at the Orchard” started off with a visit to the Peach Glen Plant where we learned how they process between 9.5 and 11.5 billion bushels of apples a year. While some are processed immediately, others are stored in CA or controlled atmosphere and can actually keep at just 2% oxygen! Unlike cherries which must be processed quickly, within 72 hours, apples can store well at cool temperatures. For the consumer, this just means we should store apples in the refrigerator in the crisper drawer or just eat applesauce to get all of the same benefits!

Did You Know? Musselman’s applesauce is actually a blend of apples such as Golden Delicious, York and Rome.

When I asked about future product possibilities, some of which are on the radar and others not so much, I heard “If you can’t make a quality product, there’s no point making it.” So true. Next we visited C&G Orchard which produces 30,000 bushels of apples each year. While this seemed like an astounding number to us, the group learned other growers will go over the 250,000 mark!

Here are some other tidbits I learned at the orchard:

  • My favorite apples…Honey Crisp.
  • The life span of an apple tree is approximately 25 years.
  • Knouse, the parent company that owns Musselmans’ has 25 quality standards when classifying apples!
  • There is very little waste when processing apples. The peeling is used in juice, for instance, and little is actually tossed away.
  • Frost is the enemy to apple growers.
  • Orchardists trim trees, mow grass, tie fallen trees, calibrate sprayers, pass inspections, pick apples and work long hours for minimal profit.

During our day we also learned about Knouse Foods sustainability efforts and visited their solar field where 30% of power to the plant originates. From conserving water to working with Penn State University (my alma mater!) to look at alternate pest control methods, it’s a company committed to improvement on every level. We were even privy to some future product possibilities such to delight parents and become as big of a ht as my favorite Musselman’s Applause product, Totally Fruit, which is sweetened naturally with fruit juice and is oh so yummy.

So many of the people I encountered during our “Day at the Orchard” have been working for the company for many years.–a testament to their dedication to the brand. I couldn’t more pleased to have visited and personally experienced the quality testing (and re-testing) on a product line our family uses and loves.

Danimals Rally for Recess: $20,000 Playgrounds Up For Grabs!

As a teacher myself and mother to two young children, I can certainly attest to the importance of recess and channeling energy in positive and healthful ways. Too often programs which are non core-curriculum related are the first at risk in an era of high stakes testing in which we live. Jumping into the fray to promote physical activity for children is a company our family loves who is already a partner in our (sometimes daily) battle to live healthy.

Dannon Danimals, makers of yogurt, smoothies and other kids’ creations, have a cool contest called Rally for Recess. We tested it out by purchasing Dannon® Danimals® Smoothies which the kids took in their lunch boxes to school. The premise of the contest is simple…compete against other school for one of five $20,000 playground makeovers. Just gather and enter codes from specialty marked packages, be the top point getter in your league and win! You can check out your school’s progress in the leaderboard anytime.

As a Language Arts teacher, I especially appreciate the “Hey kids, this is advertising!” at the top of the page as we often discuss hidden messages and compensation for advertising in class. (Students are often surprised to learn they are walking advertisements with their choice of clothing. When I ask how much they are getting paid to wear a t-shirt they are usually quite confused!)

Advertising or not, our family are Dannon fans and Rally for Recess is a worthwhile investment of time for busy moms and dads. With $20,000 playground on the line, it’s game time. So rally your school to start eating some yogurt.

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Danimals and received a gift card to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Hershey’s Air Delight: Tasted Tested & Approved

Hershey’s Aerated Milk Chocolate is a whole new way to enjoy a cherished favorite of mine. As I’ve chronicled before, my life-long love of all things Hershey’s only intensified after visiting the Milton Hershey School last Fall after seeing the wonderful things they are doing for kids in need. To say I’m biased for Hershey’s is an understatement, so with that disclaimer out of the way, I’m pleased to present a cool pick you must try for yourself. Air Delight, while yummy in Hershey Kiss form, is even better in my opinion as a bar. Getting the full-fledged aerated taste, I accidentally ate both bars Hershey’s sent in two days, only sharing a few squares with the kids. They were privy to the Kisses after all. Speaking of Hershey yumminess, if you haven’t check out Hershey Drops yet, pick up a bag and see for yourself how they don’t melt in your hands. Personally all of this chocolate talk is making me anxious to take a trip to Chocolate World. I can feel an NEPA day trip coming on…

Outstandwich Road Trip Sweepstakes *Plus $100 AmEx Card Giveaway*

This summer we took our longest road trip with the kids…nearly 9 hours to Concord, North Carolina with Experimental Mommy and her family. Part business as we prepare for Reviewer’s Retreat at Great Wolf Lodge 2012 and part family vacation, it actually went well on the road thanks to our friend the DVD player.

Maybe thanks to the Outstandwich Road Trip Sweepstakes we’ll be making another road trip.  We entered for a chance to win one of four $3,750; one is given out each week! Since we can enter once a day, I’ve bookmarked the site and definately shared for a bonus entry. (Once you enter you will have the opportunity to tell a friend about the sweepstakes. By doing so, you will automatically receive one bonus entry.) Today I shared with my sister who is therefore obligated to take me if she win.

Another benefit of visiting Outstandwich.com is gathering the yummy sandwich recipes gathered by bloggers across the US and Kraft Kitchens. I’m not surprised to see a Double-Stacked Oven Grinder and Cheesesteak Sandwich in the Northeast Region since both grinders and cheesesteaks are staple foods in this area. The Southwest ones look extra yummy, especially the Tex-Mex Green Chille Wrap which looks much more exciting than my usual turkey sandwich.

Have fun entering the Outstandwich Road Trip Sweepstakes and enjoy the recipes.

Disclosure: I was compensated for this post, and Kraft Foods is providing the prizes for this program at no cost to me. This program is not administered or sponsored by Kraft Foods or its affiliates, but solely by me.

Cool Giveaway: Enter to win a $100 American Express gift card to take your own mini road trip adventure by commenting on this post about which sandwich recipe looks yummiest to you. For extra entries:

The WhoNu? Oxymoron: Nutritious Cookies *Giveaway*

When I teach oxymorons to my 8th graders, I’ll have a new example in my arsenal. Nutritious cookies are not typically two words you’d imagine in one phrase, yet WhoNu? is paving the way for a whole new category of snack. Yummy cookies including chocolate and vanilla crème and both soft & chewy as well crispy chocolate chip offer more nutrition than you’d ever imagine. Each WhoNu? cookie serving (3 cookies)has 3 grams of fiber and 20 essential vitamins and minerals. This translates to as much:

  • fiber as a bowl of oatmeal
  • calcium and Vitamin D as an 8 oz. glass of milk
  • Vitamic C as a cup of blueberries
  • Iron as a cup of spinach
  • Vitamin E as two cups of carrot juice
  • Vitamin B12 as a cup of cottage cheese and fruit
  • Vitamin A as an 8 oz. glass of tomato juice.

Who knew cookies could be so nutritious?

If you’re a parent who is OK with giving kids treats from time to time, it makes sense to choose ones that pack a nutritious punch. Neither myself nor my kids noticed a taste difference between WhoNu? cookies and varieties without the nutrition. The ultimate taste tester—Cool Baby Dad— didn’t blink and eye when given the vanilla crème cookie. It’s not surprising these cookies took years of research and testing to perfect.  Talk about a dream job; I wonder if Suncore Products is hiring a taste tester for future cookie varieties? Just in case they’re reading, here is my resume. And thanks for yummy, nutritious snack.

Pedia-Lax Fiber Gummies *Fiber Supplement for Kids*

While not as sexy as some topics we cover on Cool Baby Kid, regularity in kids is important nonetheless. One of my children is an extremely picky eater making constipation a concern. Though we try many of the items listed on Everyday Regularity, sometimes she balks at being told when to hit the restroom. Recently, in conjunction with Reviewer’s Retreat, I’ve been introduced to a product that makes me breathe a little easier knowing my preschoolers headed in the right direction in terms of #2. Sugar-free Pedia-Lax Fiber Gummies, taken three times a day, can help promote regularity in kids ages 2-11. While my son dislikes gummies for some odd reason, my daughter, luckily the child with a questionable diet, loves them and takes all three recommended supplements alongside her daily vitamin. I was also pleased to learn Pedia-Lax Fiber Gummies are dentist approved. From the Gummies FAQ page:

What is the ingredient Xylitol in Fiber Gummies?

Xylitol is a sweetener that occurs naturally. It can be found, for instance, in berries, fruits, vegetables and mushrooms. Unlike sugars and starches, Xylitol, a sweetener, may reduce the risk of dental caries and does not promote tooth decay.
