Musicolor: Combining Creativity & Technology {Giveaway}

Musicolor by Delta Creative is a fun and creative toy that will enhance your child’s creativity by turning color into music. We liked it because it was so easy to do together as a fun-filled family activity. The kit includes a model record players and paper records that your child colors. The paper records have numbers on them so it is also a great exercise in following directions. If you color in all the numbers correctly the record will play a song. Some of the songs include: Jingle Bells, Three Blind Mice, and Humpty Dumpty. This innovative tool compares the power of technology with creativity in a unique way. Musicolor had my four year old occupied for almost an hour. She did need prompting to stay in the lines; I would recommend it for children from 4 to 7 years old. Musicolor was nominated for Toy of the Year in 2009 and also in Playthings Toy of the Week in October, 2009. It is available on Amazon.com, Target.com, and Deltacreative.com and a wonderful activity for the winter months.

Rockabye Baby: Lullaby Renditions of Rock Bands {Giveaway}

WE WILL ROCK YOU….to sleep. I didn’t think there could be a soothing rendition of Fat Bottomed Girls yet Rockabye Baby’s lullaby interpretation is just that. If you are like me you do not want to subject anyone to your singing, let alone possibly have your child’s first memory be your off-key performance of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Now at bedtime I press play on Rockabye Baby’s CDs and put my Pink Floyd instrumentals to rest. With Rockabye Baby you can choose from numerous artists ranging from the Beatles to No Doubt and get a jump-start embedding some subliminal hints to ensure that you and your child will have at least one thing in common. Who could have imagined lullaby renditions and rock music
would pair so nicely.

Thank you Rockabye Baby for providing a CD for review purposes to Maggie, Cool Baby Kid writer and contributor.

Putumayo Presents: A Family Christmas CD {Giveaway}

One could argue that early November is a bit early for holiday displays. A rational person understand a longer holiday season equals larger profits for retailers. But you know what? I don’t care. I’ve bought into the idea hook, line and sinker. The first batch of kids’ gifts are wrapped, my family is being harassed daily to get on Wishpot to update wish lists, and Christmas music has taken a place in our daily dance parties. Though a huge fan of Putumayo, I didn’t realize until recently it’s motto was “guaranteed to make you feel good” but it fits perfectly.

Cool Baby Kid readers know of my long-standing love affair with Putumayo and A Family Christmas is yet another winner. I personally love the acoustic version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town by Jonny Bregar, but the kids’ favorite is hands-down Debbie Davis & Matt Perrine’s Mele Kalikimaka, an upbeat tune which manages to combine holiday and tropical in one catchy melody. Each song is accompanied with a story about the song’s history in a package that is nice enough to give as a gift or keep for yourself as you join the rest of the world in starting the holiday season just a bit earlier this year. Are you giving in or waiting until post-Thanksgiving to get into the holiday mood?

Putumayo Family Christmas receives a *Top Pick* designation for being one of favorite companies and #1 selection for holiday music, with or without the kids!

Cool Giveaway: Enter to win a copy of Putumayo Presents: A Family Christmas with artists like Leon Redbone, Brave Combo, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddies by visiting their site and commenting back here with one thing you learned.

Halloween Is Coming: Trick or Treat Tales {Barney Giveaway}

Is it time for Halloween already? Well, if you want to prepare your kids for this yearly thrill, what better way then some not-so-scary tales from HIT entertainment. I had the pleasure of watching two of the DVDs with my boys – and boy did they love them!

My favorite was Shaun the Sheep: Little Sheep of Horrors. I’ve never watched the show before, but it’s from the Oscar-Winning creators of Wallace & Gromit. Shaun is a very smart, skinny sheep and his herd pretty much follows his lead – even though Bitzer the dog should really be in charge! In this DVD you watch 6 spooky stories with no talking, but a lot of laughs! The stories are Little Sheep of Horrors, Abracadabra, Things That Go Bump, Heavy Metal Shaun, Troublesome Tractor and Sheepwalking. Pretty much Shaun will have a few tricks played on him and a lot more that he dishes out on his friends!

The other DVD we watched was Trick or Treat Tales, which featured episodes of your kid’s favorite pals. Episodes included Flour Power (Thomas & Friends), Guess Who (Barney), Trix’s Pumpkin Pie (Bob the Builder), Pirate Primrose (Fifi and the Flowertots), The Costume Ball (Angelina Ballerina) and Cat Magic (Fireman Sam). My favorite of those episodes was Trix’s Pumpkin Pie – because I loved the scarecrow! I think my oldest son preferred Thomas & Friends’ Flour Power. He just loves the trouble Thomas seems to find! It’s a great collection of Halloween Tales for your Toddler and Preschooler!

Must Have Children’s Music + Giveaway {Two Winners}

Asheba’s Caribbean Music for Children and Hot Peas and Butter, Best of the Bowl, Ingles and Espanol are two must have CDs for kids.

I will admit that, at times, I was tired of listening to my three year old’s CD’s in the car…until I started listening to these CD’s. Not only are they fun to listen to but they also teach many important concepts in both English and Spanish! Asheba’s goal is to try to encourage hope and happiness in children of all ages. I encourage you to read his blog and visit his web site. The site also provides samples of the music as well as videos. “In the Kid Zone” was nominated for a Grammy in the category, “Best Musical Album for Children“. My three year old loves listening to it, and I love the fact that she is gaining exposure to an interactive multicultural album! This would also be a great addition to a pre-school classroom or a daycare center.

Hot Peas and Butter, Best of the Bowl
Ingles and Espanol” is as wonderful as the title sounds. Every song on this album will have you and your little ones singing right along. You may even find yourself playing this album when you are alone. This album won the 2006 and 2008 “Parent’s Choice Award.” The first song on the album, “Round the World” gives you a delightful trip around the world. I was delighted that my three year old added the following words to her vocabulary: Bolivia, Peru, North America, and South America just to name a few. In “Somos Familia Redux” they sing about family names in Spanish. My three year old now knows that her uncle is “Mi Tio“. How incredible! Their mission is to inspire creativity in children and adults and have raised over 10 million dollars for St.Jude Children’s Foundation.

Putumayo Kids Music: Our Daily Trip Around the World

As I head back to school this week to teach Language Arts to 8th graders, I’m excited to re-connect with Putumayo Kids, a Cool Baby Kid all-time favorite. While their new CD, Picnic Playground, is a perfect companion to daily dance parties with our 1.5 and 3 year old children, the Putumayo Kids teacher tools remind me of resources I can incorporate into the classroom as well. According to their site, “Putumayo Kids produces music that entertains, educates and inspires cultural curiosity,” and I could not agree more. Since discovering Putumayo Kids, it has become an almost daily part of our lives since we love to dance! Picnic Playground doesn’t disappoint. Taking us around the world, from the USA to Europe and beyond, songs like our favorites Ice Cream by Asheba (Trinidad) and Pomodoro by Bomba (Australia) offers upbeat tunes for dancing while expanding our cultural horizons at the same time.

Originally intended as designated pool music for the kids, we we ended up listening to Caribbean Playground, a CD celebrating Caribbean culture, at our “adult” pool parties too beacuse of its unique ability to appeal simultaneously to kids and parents alike. One of the only companies to be listed as a “What We Love Right Now” in addition to being a CBK *Top Pick* as well as an “Editor’s Top 10 Favorites.” Do we love Putumayo Kids? You bet.

Smart Tip: For a fun island sound listen to Jamaica Farewell (Jamaica) by Desmond Dekke fun island sound and Tambou Dan Tche Nou (Martinique)by Kali for a fast, hip shaking dance tune. Preview Putumayo Kids children’s music on their website.

DVD Picks: New from Thomas the Train & Barney {Giveaway}

Thomas the Train: Hop on Board Songs and Stories DVD/CD

Thomas the Train DVD and CD set is fabulous. The DVD is a collection of stories with the songs playing throughout the DVD. My son danced, and cheered to each song and enjoyed the stories. He asks for it by name and learns colors and numbers throughout the DVD. The DVD is great but you also get a Thomas the Train CD. This made car rides enjoyable for my 18 month old son as well as my husband and myself. We wouldn’t be able to take long car rides without it. I strongly recommend this product which is why we’re giving it *Top Pick* status!

Sing & Dance with Barney– DVD & Music Set

I wanted to review a Barney DVD for one reason…neither my kids nor I have even watched Barney. Shocking as it may seem, I associate Barney with my little sister (now in law school) who was a Barney fanatic when she was little. “I love you, you love me” was stuck in my head for more years than I cared to remember. Fast forward 15 years. We popped in the “Sign & Dance with Barney” DVD and my daughter already knew some of the some from the sitter. She and my son (15 months) couldn’t get enough. Grudingly I realized why Barney has been a hit for so long; the songs were fun and catchy and now “You Can Count on Me” is one of our favorite songs to sing. With renditions of classics like “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and some originals too, this is actually a perfect DVD and music CD for any kid (and parent too) who likes to sign and dance as we do nearly every day.
