Chatting with Dr. Oz: Mammography Guidelines, Hand Sanitizer Safety, and Is H1N1 Vaccine Safe for Kids?

Today we had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Oz about keeping our families healthy this holiday season. Dr. Oz is both the star the Dr. Oz show on NBC each afternoon as well as the co-author of the You series of books.

New Mammography Guidelines

What does Dr. Oz think about the new guidelines? Tune in Monday as they offer a special look at this hot topic!

Hand Sanitizers

The biggest danger with hand sanitizers is in swallowing it. Soap and water is the best method for keeping clean, but hand sanitizers–alcohol based as opposed to anit-bacterial–are the next best option and better than coming into contact with germs.

Portion Control Tip

Watch alcohol and food intake over the holidays. Never walk around with both hand full. Be sure one is open to exchange greetings, and alternate alcohol with water which prevents overdoing it.

Flu & H1N1 Vaccine

If you feel the regular flu shot is safe then get the H1N1 shot for your children. Getting sufficient sleep and physical activity is important to boost the immune system. Obesity is immune suppressant so eating healthy. Natural options for keeping flu at bay for parents? Vitamin D and North American Ginseng for adults and broccoli for the whole family.

Staying Healthy on Airplanes

Because of air circulation the person one seat over and behind you receive the effects. One tip…put on air vent low above your head and aim it just below the chest and be sure to clean off the table in front of you with an anti-bacterial wipe. For hotels, take off the comforter since it is full of germs and either clean the remote control or put it in a plastic bag since it is full of germs.

Minimize Stress Over the Holidays

Get more sleep! Many people skip sleep at this time of year, so be sure to receive 7 to 7.5 hours each night. And a few minutes of stretching or focusing to re-set yourself each morning (yoga, mediation, exercise, etc.) is important to practice mental resilience. Exercising early in the day, though the first few minutes can be tough, is a great way to get yourself ready for the day.

Emotional Eating

Take 100 calories less per day than you would have otherwise is one simple strategy to get rid of the weight you would have otherwise gained.

My personal impression of Dr. Oz…this guy knows his stuff! Ask a question yourself or tune in to Oprah and Cool Baby Kid’s favorite doctor on call.

Outstanding Performace? By Cool Baby Kid? Aww Shucks…

I’m flattered to be nominated for Outstanding Performance in the Dottie Awards, feeling humble in light of such a notable and prestigious presence of other outstanding blogs like Ohana Mama. No campaigning …I’m just letting the chips fall where they may. If I win, fantastic. If not, no big deal.

Or not!!! I love to win, and need your help. I’ve been there for you with fantastic giveaways. I created a whole new blog just to answer my loyal readers’ questions on Ask Baby Kid. At 5:30 a.m. before work I’ve faithfully put up posts in the morning not wanting to disappoint the most awesome subscribers and followers in the world. All I ask in return is a teeny weeny second to head over to Mom Dot to vote for Cool Baby Kid for Outstanding Performance. I want to make it very, very easy for you:

  1. Go to MomDot by clicking here.
  2. Scroll down to the 5th category, “Outstanding Performance” and vote for Cool Baby Kid (Cissy). That’s me.
  3. Feel good about helping a friend in need, pat yourself on the back and eat something yummy to reward yourself.

Cool Giveaway: I’m digging into the CBK closet for a single purpose. I know some of my readers happen upon this site through contest links, so I am shamelessly bringing you here just to vote for me. Wicked? Maybe. But hopefully you’ll win a Super Baby Prize Pack which includes a pair of Not Sox by Baby Legs, “One Two” by my favorite book company, Begin Smart, and the Tummy Ticklers Dog by Baby Einstein. To enter, vote for Cool Baby Kid for Best Outstanding Performace and comment back here with how many votes I’ve received after your vote. And thank you in advance! You rock. Congratulations Beverly!

Fabulous Mom Blogs & A Swanky New Award

Why thank you darling… I’m taking a break from review blogging today to display a shiny new award Cool Baby received this week. Thanks to Life Starring Ellie & Eve, a new blog friend I was lucky enough to connect with recently, I’m feeling simply fabulous today. As with all blog awards, this one comes with a to do list which happens to be a list of five addictions. So here goes: blogging, running, thinking, reality television and Diet Pepsi. I can’t stop doing any of those which is why I consider each an addiction. And the other “Your Blog is Fabulous!” stipulation? Give to five other fabulous blogs. Of course, if you really love another blog you should also give them Blog Popz which will enter you to win grand prizes like a $250.oo Kids Coats gift certificate and nearly $150.00 in Zutano baby clothes! I’m going to break the rules just a bit and give to the four fabulous blogs who helped me launched Popz and run the Blog Popz Candy Stores: The Not-So-Blog, Ohana Mama, Suzy Q Homemaker and From Dates to Diapers. CBK readers…what do you think makes a blog fabulous?

Cool Tip: Giving awards is a great way to network with fellow bloggers and get to know new ones. And if you’re not a blogger, it’s fun to check out the rewarded blogs for great new ideas and contests!

Baby Kid Blogs In the News!

Happy Thanksgiving! Cool Baby Kid is thankful for a teriffic news story this week on the launch. On Tuesday, WNEP 16, a local TV station, ran a story about the Baby Kid Blogs. In a parenting segment by Mindi Ramsey, all three were highlighted. It was mentioned that Cool Baby Kid, the original site, helps moms find the coolest products and resources for their kids. Specifically, the post for Bella Tunno bibs, were shown in addition to Karate Kate Graphics’ customized holiday stamps. They discussed Smart Baby Kid, one of the new blogs, and how the reviews there focus on educational products and resources. I was thrilled that the reporter also pointed out another of the new blogs, Ask Baby Kid, and that it is a resource not just for parent tips but for those who are getting into blogging too. Thanks WNEP for a great story and validating the leverage mom bloggers are gaining in the online world. And welcome NEPA readers…thanks for stopping by.

Cool Tip: If you’re new to the sites, be sure to subscribe either by RSS or email and become a follower to get the latest updates on great tips, picks and giveaways!
