WE WILL ROCK YOU….to sleep. I didn’t think there could be a soothing rendition of Fat Bottomed Girls yet Rockabye Baby’s lullaby interpretation is just that. If you are like me you do not want to subject anyone to your singing, let alone possibly have your child’s first memory be your off-key performance of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Now at bedtime I press play on Rockabye Baby’s CDs and put my Pink Floyd instrumentals to rest. Who could have imagined lullaby renditions and rock music

Baby Bonkie: Cool Baby Kid’s Pick for Best Swaddling Blanket

I’ll never forget the day my husband came home from work telling me that the key to a new parent’s sanity was swaddling. Honestly neither of us had much experience with babies before ours so we took all the advice we could get. Some of it worked and some of it just didn’t help us but I can’t tell you where we’d be without that swaddling advice. Now once you realize that you can’t live without a swaddling blanket the next step is picking what one. From my own experience the Baby Bonkie is the best swaddling blanket one out there. The cocoon shape at the bottom prevents your baby from kicking their legs out and the multiple velcro closures don’t allow for your baby to break her arms free unlike other velcro swaddlers I’ve tried. Not only are they the most well constructed swaddlers I’ve found but they actually came about as a way for mothers to give their children a little style. True to the company’s goal, these are by far the cutest ones I’ve seen. I had a chance to review the Ava and the Maggie Minkee and not only are they adorable but they made my husband wish out loud that they made adult versions. For all the new moms out there, if you haven’t heard about swaddling before trust me this is one piece of advice you’ll want to take to heart. This is a great shower gift or gift for a new mom.

Not to be confused with Ferber–a moment of quiet reverence for the man who helped both of my children to sleep through the night– Elaine Farber’s book, Baby Lists, is another must-have in the “preparing for baby” book department. Actually, I think both Ferber and Farber’s books will be the ones I’ll give to expecting friends or family members from now on. Baby Lists is the only “what to do and what to get” resource you’ll need to prepare for the new addition. From buying and packing a diaper bag to travelling accessories and safety products, it’s not only comprehensive but easy to read. Forgoing lengthy chapters and long articles, the book is presented in short paragraphs and lists as a reference for when you need it. Q&A: Solving Your Child’s Sleep Problems

Ferberizing 101

Though I’ve already written a review on Ferber’s Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems, after using the book recently a second time with baby number two I remembered why Dr. Ferber was one of my favorite people in the world and worth another look. With a two year old who sleeps like a charm and a four month old we recently “sleep trained,” I’m even more convinced of his methods. Basically it boils down to using the “progressive waiting” approach and letting baby cry. Yes, it’s awfully hard and makes you want to cry too but in the long run is best for the entire family. You wait 3, 5, 7, and 10 minutes progressively without picking up or rocking etc. though you can verbally reassure them for a minute or so. The goal is for baby to learn to sleep on their own. If he or she is also feeding upon waking, you must also break that habit by extending the time 1/2 hour each night until the feeding is pushed back into the morning. Using this method, we went from 2-3 wakings with feedings to a ten hour stretch of sleep a few weeks later. Buy Solving Your Child’s Sleep Problems and join the Dr. Ferber Fan Club. (I haven’t been in a fan club since Luke Skywalker, but that one I would join!)
