Education Corner: LeapFrog Reading Tips & A Smart Toy

As an educator myself with a background in Language & Literacy, no topic concerning kids’ education is as important to me as reading– the cornerstone of educational success. And one company knows how to make education fun…LeapFrog. With a panel of experts on kids’ learning they not only manufacture toys but also offer parents knowledge about topics ranging from early childhood education to tech savvy tips for mamas. Here are some tips from their Literary Expert Caroyln James, PhD:

· Hunt for words wherever you are. Play “find the letter” games with your children in the car, at the park, wherever your day takes you.

· Go on a rhyming treasure hunt. Help your child find items in the house or around the town that rhyme with a chosen object. Turn it into a song.

· Find ways to bring books to life. When you read aloud, “voice” the characters and add drama to the narration. Educational products like LeapFrog’s Tag Reading System can foster independent and shared reading time by encouraging children to bring books to life on their own.

· Play beat-the-clock. Help your child link objects to names by opening a book or magazine and asking her to point to and name as many letters, numbers, objects or colors as she can in 30 seconds.

Smart Tip: On a side note, we purchased the LeapFrog Text & Learn for by alphabet-obsessed son and he absolutely adores it. Another winner. Check out even more educational tips and toys on Cool Baby Kid.

Quick Tip Tuesday: Baby Search & Bounce…Woot Woot!

Cool Product: The Bounce dryer bar has revolutionized how we do laundry. Sounds dramatic, I know, but it’s true. The time it takes to reach for a sheet and put it in the dryer equals three sips of tea I can sneak in before the box of Cheerios spills to the ground.

Smart Tip:
Check out Kids.Woot every day to see what deal they’ve got going. I have a handful of deal a day sites bookmarked, and this is one good one.

Cool Contest: Regis & Kelly are hosting the Beautiful Baby Search and this week readers (like you!) can log on to vote for their favorites. Winner receives a $125,000 college scholarship and cover on Parenting Early Years. How CUTE are they? Warning…it’s hard to choose…

Let me just say that if you have kids (or a husband…wink, wink) YOU NEED THIS BOOK! When I first agreed to do this review I thought, “I hope this isn’t some fancy decorating book that suggests you spend a lot of money to redo your home” but after reading it I found it is exactly the opposite! It is practical.

I am so clueless on so many design topics that this book has become my new decorating bible and suggest it becomes yours too. You will soon see you cannot decorate for the messiness in your home without it. Purchase at Slob Proof! Real Life Design Solutions on Amazon.com.

Laugh and Learn DVD Series: DVD Birthing Classes {Giveaway}

When I found out I was pregnant I was shocked, dubious, and then terrified. I took a test every day for four days just to make sure the baby was still there and then when I was sure I was indeed still pregnant I needed to prepare myself with information. I bought all the “best“ books and googled a different question every day regarding my symptoms. These books got me through the first couple of months, but then the terror of delivery loomed near. I registered for my first Lamaze class but was later disappointed to learn that my class dates had been postponed. At this point it was too late for me to finish all the classes with my work schedule so I did without and regretted it. I felt confused and uninformed in the delivery room and vowed not to make that mistake again.

For baby #2 I have Laugh & Learn: About Childbirth childbirth DVD to keep me calm. It is fantastic because you can watch it at any time. When there are topics that are confusing (or when your husband is not paying attention) you can simply rewind the DVD and watch it again. Also, for just $79.95 you can receive all three of Sheri Bayles’ Laugh and Learn DVDs: About About Childbirth, About Breastfeeding, and About Newborn Baby Care. If your husband is like mine he will take the “don’t know how to, can’t do it” approach. With the Laugh and Learn: About Newborn Baby Care though you don’t have to accept that excuse. This video shows you everything from swaddling to diaper changing to baths so that your husband can confidently handle these things while you are taking that much needed nap!

Another great subject is covered in the Laugh and Learn: About Breastfeeding DVD. Right after giving birth to a baby that has been living inside me for nine months the last thing I wanted to do was take breastfeeding classes; instead I wanted to get to know my baby. With this DVD you can get your most frequently asked questions answered: how do you hold them, how long do you do this, etc. and you can do it at your own pace when you are actually paying attention without a room full of visitors.

All three of DVDs cover some great topics and for only $79.95 I think this set should be at the top of any new mother’s registry.
